RE-UPHOLSTERED 19C. ARMCHAIRS
Old 19c. French armchairs, often known as chauffeuses (fireside chairs) are stripped down to
basics by my master upholsterer, then re-fitted with traditional materials like hair and wool, and finally re-covered in furnishing
weight cotton or linen prints, often old and pretty curtains like these, or coarse linen or hemp sacking.
I have sold several dozen in the last few years. They are all a convenient smaller size so can be used in bedrooms and snug
study rooms. They vary in price from £350 to £550 and are extremely good value and most comfortable with
good back support!
A CHARM OF FRENCH 19C.
ARMCHAIRS!
The chairs and curtains, lower right
picture from a magazine, were made up from Hungarian grain sacks and indigo dyed hemp sheets for Katrin Cargill, well known
author and designer, by myself and Polly Lyster, dyer, and long time colleague. I think these were the first of the
many hundreds that have been made since!
